The Inside Track on Dining in NEWA
The Mustang Grill: Sometimes you can tell by the cars in the parking lot if a restaurant is worth a try. That's certainly true of The Mustang Grill on the main drag at 101 Center Avenue. Since they've opened, they've established themselves as the local hangout because of the food and the friendly hometown atmosphere. They can be reached at 509 732-6179.
China Bend Winery: China Bend Vineyards has been producing fine quality organic wines for a number of years now, and continues to bring home awards for their excellent wine. Most of their grapes are grown on the estate itself, and each wine has a personality all its own. The vintner adds no sulfates to the wines, so these are wines that are headache-free. But China Bend produces fine breads, sauces, jams, jellies and condiments from its organic gardens as well. Salsa, pesto, huckleberry jam, pickled green beans they call dilly beans are just a sampling of what the cooks at China Bend turn out every year. Stop by their tasting room for samples or attend one of their many events and see for yourself. This is what locally-produced gourmet food is all about. China Bend is located off the Northport-Flat Creek Road. Call 1-800-700-6123 or visit www.chinabend.com for directions.
Meyers Falls Market: A natural food store featuring organic, natural and locally-grown food, Meyers Falls is home to a cozy cafe with an offering of soups, sandwiches, salads, and other treats. Located on Hwy 395 in the Old Apple Warehouse in Kettle Falls, the store can be reached at 509-738-2727 or on the web at MeyersFallsMarket.com
Lovitt Restaurant: Nobody could believe it when the Lovitt Restaurant came to town in 1995. Chef Norman Six and his wife Kristen were running a successful gourmet restaurant in the Chicago area, but decided to move to Colville to be closer to family. When they did, they brought their restaurant skills with them and started over here in a classy Victorian house on a hill overlooking the Colville Valley just south of town. Since then, Norman has been exploring the regional cuisine, which he believes is unique because of our climate, culture, and agricultural offerings. He relies upon locally grown and wild foods as much as possible, and he and Kristen grow many of their own herbs and spices in the gardens that surround the restaurant. People from throughout the region have made the drive to Colville to check out the Lovitt, and everyone says the same thing: They're shocked to find such a fine restaurant in such a small town so far away from the urban centers where most gourmet restaurants are found. The restaurant is located on Hwy 395 just south of Colville. For information, call 509 684-5444 or email contact@lotittrestarant.com. The website is www.lovittrestaurant.com.
Heather's Fairy Tale Bakery: Walking in to Heather's is like walking in to a fairy tale, with the old-world architecture and fixtures and the hand-painted scenes from children's stories on the walls. And the baked items are plentiful and delectable: cakes, cookies, turnovers, breads of all kinds, you name it. Heather's also serves espresso for people on the go, and lunches. This local treasure is located at 576 N. Wynne and can be reached at 509-684-6458.
Lost Falls Brewing: Microbrewery aficionados, rejoice! Lost Falls is here to serve up a wonderful array of ales, including pale ale, IPA, porter, and more. Dock hours are 4 to 6 Wednesdays and Thursdays and 4 to 8 on Fridays. The brewery is located at 347 W. 2nd in Colville and can be reached at 509-684-0638.
Talk 'n' Coffee: Serving up the finest espresso, teas and treats, Talk 'n' Coffee is a favorite haunt in Colville. The coffee shop is located at 119 E. Astor in downtown Colville. The phone is 509-684-2373.
