Is there something in the water? Or is it the scenic beauty and quiet lifestyle of the area? Whatever the cause, a surprising number of artists reside here. Whether it's arts and crafts, music and dance, theater or fine dining, the region is peppered with talented people who quietly craft an abundance of fine artwork. Some of it is displayed locally, some of it is sold only outside the area, but the variety and quality of the work attests to the fact that Northeastern Washington has attracted a cadre of serious and productive artists, whose work deserves special attention.

Painted Gourds by River Jones Ferry Trails Arts Gallery features the watercolors of Dorothy Beedle and hand painted glassware by Jill Beedle. Find this gem across from the Stonerose Interpretive Center on the corner of West Sixth and Kean Streets in Republic. For information, call 509-775-2249.

Kauffman Street Studios at 603 Kauffman Street also in Republic features the work of John-Dan Key and Chloe Key. The gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays late spring through late summer. The website is www.kauffmanstreetstudios.com.

Community Theater

Woodland Productions presents fine quality community theater throughout the year at the Woodland Theatre on Highway 395 in Kettle Falls. Their spring musical is a regional favorite, as are concerts by the Woodland Orchestra. Information is available at www.woodlandproductions.org.

The Cutter Theatre is located at 302 Park St. in Metaline Falls in a magnificent building designed by Kirkland Cutter. The Cutter is home to a talented community theater group with an active production schedule, and an impressive schedule of performances throughout the year. With a historical museum on the ground floor and an art gallery above, The Cutter is the heart of a vivacious arts community in northern Pend Oreille County. For information, call 509-446-4108, or visit the website at www.cuttertheatre.com.

Fine Dining

While there are plenty of good restaurants to choose from in the area, Lovitt Restaurant in Colville deserves special mention here because its chef, Norman Six, is taking fine dining to new spectacular heights. Six has identified a unique regional cuisine and is busily exploring all its culinary expressions, to good effect as his many loyal customers will affirm. The restaurant garnered national attention when it was located in Chicago, so Colville feels very fortunate to have it recreated here in a Queen Anne farmhouse that's on the Washington State Register of Historic Places. Lovitt Restaurant is located just south of Colville at 149 Hwy.395 S. For information or reservations, call 509-684-5444, or visit the website at www.lovittrestaurant.com.
